Medicaid Expansion
On December 1, 2023, Governor Cooper signed Medicaid Expansion into law. This will allow 600,000 North Carolinians access to health care services. Many people who were not previously qualified for all Medicaid benefits may now qualify due to changes in North Carolina state regulations.
You may have received a letter from the state about Medicaid Expansion. This letter can be very confusing. We are here to help you understand the changes.
Most people are eligible to get health care coverage through NC Medicaid, if:
- You live in North Carolina
- You are ages 19 through 64 years old
- You are a citizen (some non-US citizens can also get health care coverage through Medicaid)
- And if your household income falls within the chart below:
Single Adults | $1,676/month or less ($20,120/year) |
Family of 2 | $2,267/month or less ($27,214/year) |
Family of 3 | $2,859/month or less ($34,307/year) |
Family of 4 | $3,450/month or less ($41,400/year) |
Each additional person | add $591/month (add $7,094/year) |
If you believe that you may now qualify for Medicaid, it is imperative for you to contact your local Department of Social Services and ensure your contact information with them is correct. You can also make sure your information is up to date on ePASS online. You can also check the FAQ page on the DHHS website with the most common questions about Medicaid Expansion.
